Who Said “Change Is the Only Constant”?

“Change is the only constant in life,” Heraclitus, a Greek philosopher, is quoted as saying. This statement can also be interpreted as “changing is the only constant.” This phrase is thought to have been contained in a book authored by Heraclitus; however, the book was destroyed and only fragments remain.

This Heraclitus phrase was discovered in one of the over 100 pieces of his writings that are thought to be part of his book. He was a theorist who developed ideas regarding life’s continual flux and change. Around 500 B.C., he resided in Ephesus, Turkey, near modern-day Kusadasi.
