Who is Balthazar, the Demon?

Balthazar is a demon who appears in pop culture, including the 2005 film “Constantine,” the television shows “Charmed” and “Supernatural,” and, perhaps most famously, World of Warcraft, an online role-playing game. Balthazar’s name appears in the Bible and popular culture throughout history, but there is no substantial information about a demon in religious texts or demonology references.

Balthazar is perhaps best known for his role in the fantasy role-playing game World of Warcraft. The Demon Lord Balthazar is described in the Dark Grimoire as the last of a race of evil creatures bent on destroying Valorn’s kingdom.

Balthazar is thought to be one of the three magi, or wise men, mentioned in Matthew’s gospel. The visit of three wise men, thought to be Balthazar, Gaspar, and Melchior, to honor the infant Jesus Christ with gifts of gold, frankincense, and myrrh is described in Chapter 2.

Balthazar has also appeared in a number of films and television shows. Gavin Rossdale plays Balthazar, a half-demon who is conspiring with Satan’s son to take over Earth in the gothic thriller “Constantine.” Belthazor (a variant spelling with the same pronunciation) is the demon alter-ego of Cole Turner, a love interest of series actress Alyssa Milano, in the long-running WB television series “Charmed.” According to the Internet Movie Database, Michael Bailey Smith played Belthazor from 2000 until 2003. “Supernatural,” a WB series, has a different version of Balthazar. Balthazar, played by Sebastian Roche, is a fallen angel who appears in six episodes between 2010 and 2011.
