Soda never entirely freezes due to the carbonation and carbon dioxide, but it can transform into a slushy semi-frozen combination in about three hours. Diet sodas have a distinct reaction.
While water freezes at 32 degrees Fahrenheit, soda freezes at 30 degrees Fahrenheit due to the carbon dioxide. The liquid inside a soda bottle will remain liquid even if it is placed in the freezer or outside in cold weather. When the container is opened, the carbon dioxide immediately condenses into microscopic ice crystals, resulting in soda slush. However, not all soda containers can withstand three hours of freezing; aluminium cans have a tendency to explode before that time, splattering soda slush all over the freezer.
