What Is the Meaning of the Spade Symbol?

The spade represents knowledge, acceptance, and hard work. It is also a leaf from the cosmic tree that depicts life and represents earth in terms of the four elements. The spade, when coupled with the clubs, denotes autumn, winter, and the evil power. Spades denotes death, action, air, and intelligence in the tarot.

The 506th Parachute Infantry Regiment and the 101st American Airborne Division both wore the spade as a good luck sign during WWII. The spade markings also assisted in identifying the regiments within the airborne division, with dashes or dots at various locations assisting in identifying the battalions within the regiments.

Soldiers used the spade as a psychological weapon against Viet Cong soldiers during the Vietnam War, as a symbol of death and bad luck. The plan was to scare the soldiers away without having to battle them. To intimidate the enemy, soldiers were known to leave an ace of spades card on the body of a killed Viet Cong soldier and scatter the cards throughout battlegrounds. The practise became so widespread that the United States Playing Card Company began producing solely ace of spade cards for export.
