What Is the Average Weight of a Baby Calf?

The average birth weight of a female calf is 63.6 pounds. At birth, male calves weigh roughly 5% more than female calves. The birth weight of a calf is influenced by the heifer’s size, temperature, and maternal nutrition.

Many calves are only 7% of their mothers’ weight. A 1,000-pound heifer, for example, may give birth to a 70-pound calf. Higher birth weights are associated with colder temperatures, while lower birth weights are associated with warmer temperatures. Only when the heifer’s calories are reduced to less than 70% of her daily demands during pregnancy does she have a lower birth weight.
