The mascot for the Bud Light celebration is a dog. MacKenzie was a bull terrier named Spuds. Spuds was conceived by an Anheuser-Busch marketing executive and first appeared in a Bud Light Super Bowl television commercial in 1987.
Spuds was retired in 1989, partly due to pressure from groups who said the firm was marketing him to youngsters, after a surge to celebrity that featured multiple commercials and appearances on T-shirts and other gear. It was also discovered that the real-life dog, Honey Tree Evil Eye, was a female. She died of renal failure in Illinois just before her tenth birthday in 1993.
