Norfolk is part of the Hampton Roads region in coastal Virginia, which also includes Chesapeake, Hampton, Newport News, Poquoson, Portsmouth, Suffolk, and Williamsburg. The natural harbour area, which encompasses the mouths of the Elizabeth, James, and Nansemond rivers, has historically defined the area.
