How Much Does a Learner’s Permit in New York Cost?

A New York state Class D, or operator, learner’s permit costs $64.25 to $102.50 depending on the driver’s age as of 2014. Some counties levy a Metropolitan Commuter Transportation District surcharge.

A cost of $80 is charged to drivers aged 16 to 16 1/2. The highest charge is $92.50 for drivers between the ages of 17 and 17 1/2. Drivers who are at least 21 years old pay $64.25.

Drivers who are 18 or older are issued a Class D licence. A class D permit is available to 17-year-old drivers who finish a drivers education course. A class DJ, or junior operator, permit is issued to drivers who are 16 or 17 years old. In New York, learner’s permits and driver’s licences are valid for five years.
