Littmus Lozenges are a fictitious delicacy featured in Kate DiCamillo’s children’s book “Because of Winn-Dixie.” Littmus W. Block makes the candy in the book, and one of the main ingredients is grief. People who consume the sweets are reminded of their grief by the sweetness.
Root beer and strawberry were supposed to be the flavours of the Littmus Lozenges. Their creator had been through a lot in his life.
The novel “Because of Winn-Dixie” was first published in 2000 and made into a film in 2005. The book won numerous accolades and was named to the Teachers’ Top 100 Children’s Books list in 2007.
